London, England:  Hearty Traditional Food

London, the swinging city, has its share of hearty traditional fare - handed down by different ancient traders and conquerors.   The latest to invade London's culinary scene are the spicy treats of India.  But London has its own English delights for tourists who wish to conquer and be conquered by the traditional London food.

Breakfast

A hearty traditional London breakfast consists of the classic fried sausage, rashers of bacon, kippers, kidneys, baked beans, eggs, and mushrooms.  Bread or homemade potato bread completes the set-up for a typical English breakfast.

A full English breakfast is a marathon of different courses.  Breakfast begins with a glass of orange juice.  Porridge follows served with a wee bit of butter and milk.  The third course is heavier, replete with deviled kidneys, sausages or bacon.  The meal continues with servings of kippers or smoked fish.  It is a personal choice if one goes for fish or meats.  As a treat, bread and jam is served last.

You must try kitcherie or kitchari.  It is an Indian dish of boiled rice with flaked smoked haddock, hard-boiled eggs,   parsley, curry powder, cream or butter.  The dish is often garnished with sultanas for a fruity flavor.

Lunch

The English traditional fare is a throwback to the simplicity of lifestyle.  Bread and cheese were common fare.  There is a standing joke about English food but not anymore.  You might be surprised that English traditional food albeit with some smart additions, is actually suited to all palates.

Think about the sandwich as England's contribution to world cuisine.  The sandwich can be one's lunch! There are several combinations for a sandwich - roast beef, eggs, horseradish, and anchovies. Anyone can make a filling sandwich, which a favorite or practical fare for workdays.

Restaurants offer a variety of English traditional food - pork pie, steak, and a long list of favorite smoked, pickled and cured meats and fish. Don't be surprised if a posh restaurant has pickled herrings or kippers.  These are the number one everyday fares for the English.  You want something exotic and spicy.  Ask for Chicken masala and mulligatawny soup.  You must try Kedgeree

Dinner

Dinner might be bangers - mashed potatoes and sausages and beef Wellington.  In fancy restaurants beef Wellington is a version of fillet mignon baked in pastry crust.  An entire tenderloin cut, is inside a flaky crust.  To serve, this is sliced or served entirely with the puff pastry.

You discover an interesting array of more foods - bubble and squeak (fried left-over vegetables served with cold cuts); faggots, meatballs consisting of left-over offal; and everybody's great standby, the corned beef.  Favorite vegetables are cabbages and carrots.  Expect potatoes to appear in almost every dish.  Pies!  Your English holiday is not complete without savoring the traditional apple.  Oh, don't miss the puddings too.
