Prague

September 5th, 2008

Prague is one of Europe’s most beautiful and well preserved cities. Situated on the Vtlave river, the city has been a centre of trade, culture and art throughout it’s history.

Surviving the brutal bombings of World War Two, Prague is today inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list, as many of it’s beautiful, historic buildings remain as lovely today as when they were built.

The Town Hall and Church of Our Lady Before Tyn are two beautiful examples of architecture in Prague. The Town Hall was renovated in 1470 to restore many of it’s original Gothic features, but the clock is the original, dating back to the 15th Century. The building is now where the tourist information centre is.

The spires of the Church of our Lady Before Tyn can be seen from anywhere in Prague. What you may not notice however, until close inspection is that they were not built symmetrically. They are supposed to resemble the small but important differences between man and woman.

The most important and impressive building in Prague is the Castle. It began as a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, but gradually outer walls and other additions to the church were built, making a complex. Later fortifications were added as the complex was to become a royal residence. Today the castle is where the head of State is seated. The Crown Jewels of Prague are also on display here, but open only to the public once every eight years!!

The city of Prague is a romantic destination and many couples make Prague where they enjoy their honeymoon. Strolling by the river, taking in an Opera or shopping at the Christmas markets- it sounds like the perfect, romantic holiday. To make sure you secure your privacy and enjoy some time alone together, consider booking a Prague apartment.

Apartments in Prague are a relatively inexpensive way to stay in this city. They are generally well equipped and cosily furnished- the ideal setting for some romantic time alone together.

If romance is your thing, you should not miss the chance to walk along the Charles Bridge. This bridge was built in the 14th Century. The bridge connects the old town on Prague with Mala Strana, the historic district around the castle.

As well as extending the city walls, the purpose of building the bridge was also as a tournament ground for knight battles such as jousting.

Munich

September 3rd, 2008

Munich is a much loved European capital and travel hotspot that many visitors come to enjoy year after year. It is not the capital city of Germany (which is Berlin), but rather it is the capital city of Bavaria, a region in today’s Germany that is regarded by many to be culturally distinguished from the other regions of Germany. This belief is especially held by Bavarians themselves, having been an independent state from Germany until as recently as 1871.

Many famous aspects of “German” culture actually originate in Bavaria- lederhosen, the traditional men’s costume, white sausage, a national favourite food, and the Oktoberfest festival, the biggest internationally celebrated festival in the world, are all originally from Bavaria. Not may people know that even the Pope himself (Benedict XVI) is originally from Bavaria!

Munich, as the capital of this region has a lot to be proud of, and it’s probably because of this that many tourists really enjoy visiting the city and its surrounds. There are many activities to occupy your time. Art, history, fine cuisine and some of the prettiest landscape in Germany can be found in Bavaria’s capital. And lets not forget the national favourite- beer!!

As well as cultural complexity, Munich is an especially pretty city. Situated on the banks of the Isar river, and home to the largest and most beautiful city park in Europe, Munich also has many well preserved architectural sights to add to its attractiveness.

From the famous Marienplatz plaza, to the older beer halls like the Haufbrauhaus to the Viktualienmarkt markets, Munich is a great city to just stroll around and feel like you’ve stepped inside a European postcard. If city scenery isn’t what you’re after, your only 1-2 hours away form the stunning Bavarian Alps. Heaven on earth!

If festivals are your thing, you can’t pass up the chance to experience Munich during one of its many celebrations. Oktoberfest is the obvious example. With the beer, the dancing and eating and the drinking, its a festival that celebrates “the finer things in life”.

The first Oktoberfest was actually held in celebration of the marriage of Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese in 1810. But the event evolved to become an annual celebration of all things Bavarian that is enjoyed by both tourists and locals alike.

Other festivals that come to Munich once a year include the Munich Film Festival and the Tollwood summer and winter carnival festivals. Visiting Munich during a festival gives you another insight into local culture which otherwise you would not normally, so if you can manage to come to Munich during an event like these, we highly recommend that you do.

The only consideration you have to allow for is to book your accommodation in Munich well in advance. Munich hotels and many youth hostels will be full almost a year in advance for Oktoberfest! Another choice for accommodation you have is to rent a Munich apartment for short term rental. Apartments in Munich are a great way to experience the city with independence and privacy, freedom to cook and relax at home with your travel companions and also the chance to save money by eating at home.

Get Ready Munich have a great range of affordable and cheap Munich accommodation. Visit our website to see our Munich apartments, Munich hotels and other accommodation options in Munich.

Berlin

September 3rd, 2008

The city of Berlin is the capital of Germany, and the third most visited city in the European Union. Unlike many European capital cities, Berlin is sprawled over a large surface area, making it a great and exciting city to explore, but one that you need to spend some time in to make sure you don’t miss out on all it has to offer.

As well as being a big city with a big history, Berlin has many other “big titles” to its name. For one, it is home to the biggest population of Turkish people in the world, outside Turkey, of course. Being a very multi-cultural city, Berlin is proud to be able to say they make the best Turkish food in Europe, outside of the country itself!

The Berlin zoo is the biggest zoo in the world, in terms of how many species of animals are on display. The Berlin Zoo’s most famous attraction is Knut the polar bear who was born in captivity but rejected by his mother.

The bear captured the attention of the world over his playful personality, amid the controversy of whether humans should have interfered in nursing him and raising him after his mother abandoned him. After spending just over a month in an incubator, Knut was bottle fed and hand reared by his keepers. He still continues to be the Zoo’s most popular attraction, and the first polar bear to be born in Berlin’s zoo in 30 years.

Berlin has many famous museums you can visit during your stay. The popular Check Point Charlie Museum and the remains of the Berlin Wall are two of the busiest and most historically important, where you can learn about Berlin’s history during the war and the effects of dividing the city into East Berlin and West Berlin, until the war was torn down in 1989.

As well as a unique and chaotic history, Berlin has also achieved fame for being a centre of arts, science and research and development, strengths which are reflected in the many museums and galleries you can enjoy during a visit to the German capital.

Getting around Berlin is easy with its integrated network of overland and underground metro system- the U-bahn is the underground metro network, which connects to the S-bahn, or overland system.

Public transport in Berlin is efficient and cost-effective so tourists don’t have to spend a lot of their euros on getting around to see everything inside the city! This also add the advantage for tourists who can choose from any one of many unique suburban areas to stay while they are in the city. If you are renting an apartment in Berlin, you can rest assured no matter where you stay, you will be well connected to the rest of Berlin by its excellent transport system.

Some of the popular areas to find your accommodation in Berlin include the Kurfurstendamm shopping district and the upper-class Charlotenburg area. The Schoenberg neighbourhood is famous for a lively nightlife with plenty of good restaurants, shopping and entertainment venues and an excellent variety of accommodation in Berlin. The Wimersdorf neighbourhood is a popular place to stay for families as it is close to the Tiergarten Park and the Berlin Zoo.

No matter where you plan to stay in Berlin, Get Ready Berlin have some great, affordable holiday apartments for short term rental. Looking for a studio apartment in Berlin? Or a Berlin hotel, we can help you with the perfect Berlin accommodation for your needs.

Amsterdam

August 29th, 2008

Holland- the land of tulips and windmills indeed, but visitors to Amsterdam can tell you with confidence that this city offers so much more then wooden clogs and canals. Amsterdam is a European capital for partying. Add to that a liberal culture that has legalised personal consumption of prostitution and marijuana, and you’ve got one of the liveliest cities in Europe.

Partying aside, Amsterdam also has plenty of cultural drawcards to keep visitors returning for more and more. Art, history and culture can be found all over the city. Learn about World War II and the Nazis persecution of the Jews in Holland at the Anne Frank House, step inside the world of famed, though mad impressionist painter Van Gogh at the Van Gogh Museum.

If chilling out is your thing, you can head to the Amsterdam zoo and astronomical museum, or ride a bike along the famous canal banks, soaking up the scenery and marvelling at the houseboats parked in the canals. Near to the city, you’ve got forests and beautiful nature reserves like you would have never imagined.

Add to that a great, eclectic mix of restaurants, bars, shopping districts, antique fairs and a crazy nightlife, packed into a relatively small central city and you’ve got the makings of a great holiday.

Granada

August 29th, 2008

Granada is one of those quiet cities in Southern Spain that many bypass on their way to holiday capitals like Seville or Marbella. Unfortunately for them, these tourists are missing out on a real gem in Spain’s Andalusian region.

Granada’s early history dates back to the 5th Century BC, when the Greeks settled here. Later the area was under control by the Romans, but later it fell under Islamic rule by Arab settlers during the 8th Century.

One particularly special legacy of this chapter of Granada’s past is the famous Alhambra Palace, which was built as a fortress within which the rulers of the Arab kingdom could take shelter and enjoy their luxurious lifestyle in safety. Expansions and renovations to the palace over the years led to some of the most beautiful examples of Moorish architecture in Spain being well preserved for future generations to enjoy. If you plan a trip to Granada, don’t miss your opportunity to see this remarkable sight.

If you are impressed by the Alhambra, you’ll certainly be impressed with a tour of Granada’s historic Albayzín neighbourhood, which retains much of its original Arabic influence today. Tea shops, crafts and interesting Islamic architecture can be enjoyed by tourists as they wonder the tiny alleyways and medinas of the old part of town.

Granada is also a great place in Spain to enjoy some of the famous Spanish festivals such as Semana Santa (Easter) and the “Cruces de Mayo”, a religious festival where participants carry crucifixes through the streets of Granada.

The city of Granada in Spain is a historic place with a colourful Moorish past. Granada, Spain is fast becoming a popular city to visit for holidaymakers on a tour of Spain.
